We’re Getting Ready for the State Fair!

While the Minnesota State Fair does not officially start until Thursday, today is moving day for MSHS. During the 12 days of the fair, we basically move our operations from Roseville to the fairgrounds, about a mile or so down the road.

We’re setting up our display in the Agriculture/Horticulture building, getting our educational display ready, spiffing up the display garden and finalizing all the details for the State Fair plant show. Here are a few things to watch out for during this year’s fair:

tomato guyMr. Tomato Guy! He’s back and more important than ever, because our educational display this year is called Tomato Mania and it’s all about tomatoes. Tomatoes are the favorite crop of most vegetable gardeners and we’ll have information on how to grow them, how to keep them healthy and what to do with them when the harvest comes in.

The MSHS Display Garden is located on the southwest corner of the Agriculture/Horticulture building near the intersection of Judson and Underwood. This example of a late summer garden has been carefully planned and nurtured by volunteers, many from the St. Anthony Park Garden Club, under the direction of super-volunteer Ron Dufault for many years. This is Ron’s last year supervising the garden. Stop by, enjoy it’s beauty and say hello to Ron. It’s a great place to rest during the fair.

The State Fair Potted Plant and Flower Shows. MSHS sponsors one of the State Fair flower shows. Our Potted Plant Show runs the first two days of the fair (Thursday and Friday, Aug. 27-28). This  long standing tradition of MSHS features unique and unusual plant collections along with a large variety of houseplants, hanging baskets, vines, dish gardens, herb containers, and terrariums. In addition to the entries, you will see displays from different plant societies and garden groups. Don’t miss this two day event!

The MSHS Booth! Our booth features a wide range of garden books, gloves, garden art and tools. We also have volunteers there to tell you about MSHS, Northern Gardener magazine and all the benefits of joining the society. There is always a special membership offer and this year is no different.

See you at the fair!
