We Love Local Foods!

The movement to encourage folks to eat more local foods is several years old now, and it’s amazing how many foods you can enjoy in the Midwest that were grown or made here.

Of course, the best local foods are the ones from your garden, but not all of us have the space or expertise for grapes, apples, honey and other wonderful products. For that, we turn to our local pros. Next week, MSHS will be celebrating all the wonderful local products available here with our Sample the Local Harvest event at Linder’s Garden Center in St. Paul. The event starts at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, and includes wine samples from St. Croix Vineyards, apples from Brand Farms and Whistling Well Farm, honey from Bare Honey and Honey Hills Farm and cheeses from Wisconsin Sheep Dairy Cooperative.  (To register by phone, call 651-643-3601 or 800-676-6747.)

In addition to the tasty local wines and foods, the event will feature demonstrations by Linder’s staff on how to transition fall containers to a winter look, how to make European indoor baskets and create seasonal cut-flower arrangements. Who doesn’t love a chance to eat and learn?

The event has one other great feature — it’s a fundraiser for the MSHS Garden-in-a-Box program, which provides low-income families with a 3-by-3-foot cedar growing box, soil, plants and a class on vegetable gardening. What a great way to encourage gardening and healthy, local eating.

If you are a member of MSHS or the Linder’s Get Growing Club, the event is $20. For nonmembers, the charge is $25. You can register online (if you have or create an MSHS login) or you can call 651-643-3601 or 800-676-6747.
