The First District of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society is sponsoring a Fall Garden Festival and Flower Show in Red Wing on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., hosted by  the Goodhue County Horticultural Society.

The keynote speaker is Donald Mitchell, a hummingbird expert whose garden was profiled in the July/August 2011 Northern Gardener magazine. Donald attracts hundreds of hummingbirds annually to his garden near the Mississippi River in Red Wing. His presentation, “Attracting Hummingbirds to Your Garden,” will provide strategies for turning your yard into a hummingbird haven.

What is a garden without fragrance? Terry Yockey, who writes regularly for the Northern Gardener will be presenting “Fragrance in the Garden.” Hybridizing has removed the fragrance from many of our favorite plants, but you can still fill your garden with sweet aromas. The presentation will include not only annuals and perennials, but trees, shrubs, and bulbs for fragrance from early spring through fall.

Public gardens play an important role in helping us understand our relationship to the natural world. Have you every wondered how public gardens are planned, built and managed? At the end of the day, there will be a tour of the Discovery Garden lead by the Master Gardeners.

The Bluebird Recovery Program of Minnesota will have a booth in the courtyard gardens where program volunteers will be providing information on bluebirds and will be selling approved bluebird nest boxes. The MSHS will also have a booth with garden gifts and supplies and there will be an heirloom tomato tasting during the breaks.
