Getting Ready for the Minnesota State Fair

mshs state fair garden

A section of the MSHS State Fair garden — stop by to see the lovely late-summer plants.

The Minnesota State Fair is only three weeks away, and excitement is building at the MSHS office. Our stalwart volunteers have been working on the lovely, late-summer display garden that we take care of outside of the Horticulture Building, and our volunteer coordinator, Diane, is lining up folks to work in the merchandise and educational booths. We could still use a few volunteers, so if you would like to devote four hours to helping out the hort society (and would like free admission to the fair), contact Diane at dianed@northerngardener.org.

A big change for this year is our location. We will still be in the Horticulture Building, which is at the corner of Judson and Underwood, but we will be on the northeast side of the building (near the Skyride entrance), not far from The Dirt stage. In addition to the merchandise booth, where we will be selling memberships, T-shirts, gloves, a great selection of gardening books and lots of other garden inspiration, our educational display will have about 50 pots of herbs. If you are interested in unusual herbs, be sure to stop by the education booth.

The first two days of the fair also include the MSHS Plant Show! You can enter in a variety of categories by bringing your plants to the Horticulture Building on Wednesday, Aug. 21 between 2 and 7 p.m. Here’s a fun video about the show. See you at the fair!
