This weekend, Meleah Maynard’s garden was part of the Hennepin County Master Gardener’s annual garden tour. Many of you may know Meleah (pronounced Me-Lee-ah) from her Perennial Favorites column in Northern Gardener, her feature stories or her book with Jeff Gilman, Decoding Garden Advice: The Science Behind the 100 Most Common Recommendations (Timber Press, 2011).
Six years ago, her yard was all grass — a plain city yard with a single sidewalk running straight from the porch to the street. Now, it’s a lush oasis that’s a haven for birds. Check out the photos. This writer really knows her subject!
- A flagstone path leads from the garden entrance to the front of the house. Many birds frequent this area.
- The garden includes several fountains, which provide a pleasant sound and attract birds.
- Sungold tomato in horse trough
- The yard includes no turf grass, just paths, patios and gardens.
- Meleah plants closely and shears plants early in the season for a lush look.
- Great color and texture from Tiger Eyes sumac
